2017 Top 50 True Freshman RB’s and their Impact on the season.

It has been said that the running back position is one of easier positions for a true frosh to be able to play right away. When we did the quarterback position Saturday, only 16 of the Top 50 quarterbacks from the 2017 class earned passing stats or 32% of the players. I expect a higher percentage for the running backs.

As expected the numbers were higher. Of the Top 50 true frosh from the 2017 signing class, 29 earned rushing stats or 58% of them. Some running backs were moved to different positions and played as true freshman.

PS#27 AJ Dillon of Boston College led with 1,589 rush yards, 14 touchdowns and 5.3 ypc. In 2nd was Ohio St standout PS#5 JK Dobbins with 1,403 yards, 7 touchdowns and a huge 7.2 ypc. 3rd was PS#2 Cameron Akers of Florida St with 1,024 yards, 7 touchdowns and 5.3 ypc. The only three freshman to have over 1,000 yards rushing.

The top yards per carry (10 or more att) on this list went to PS#4 D’Andre Swift of Georgia who averaged 7.6 ypc on 81 attempts. JK Dobbins came in 2nd with 7.2 ypc, then PS#35 Travis Etienne of Clemson with 7.2 ypc.

Three players moved to other positions on the list. PS#8 Greg Johnson of USC moved to S, played in the first 4 games and injured his shoulder (Med RS). PS#37 Connor Wedington of Stanford moved to WR had 31 rec for 243 yds and 7.8 ypc. PS#43 Jarell White of Cincinnati moved over to LB and recorded 46 tackles and 0.5 sack.

The Top 50 running backs from the 2017 class combined for a total of 10,664 yards with 88 touchdowns and 6.4 yards per carry.
